White Picket Fence, 2014

Thomas Abbott

England, 1957

acrylic on wood

The piece in front of you was commissioned by the Minister of the Arts, George Brandis, in 2013 as part of the 'Artistic Renewal Campaign.' Scaled and constructed by artist Thomas Abbott, who considers himself a multimedia artist, this piece reinforces inherent Australian values and morals. Abbott stated: β€œIt is a symbol of protection: for our borders, our homes, our race. It is pure of heart. It represents women, particularly focused on the household budget, and a white picket fence seems like an appropriate representation of that.”
