stone, wood, metal, sorrow
By placing the bench slightly right of the center of this wall, Samneh Issam communicates with Solitude an ironic ‘fuck you’ to the abstract symmetrists of the late fifties. The harmony of the symmetrical windows is painfully broken by the wooden bench, boldly dragged to the right of center. This fracture of form sent a shockwave through the art world. Issam became known as a reckless enfant terrible, and his controversial bench work was noted throughout the entire art world. His influence has become so strong that it is now difficult to imagine a time when, in any given gallery, one could only experience symmetrical art. The bench faces away from the blue symmetric wall, encouraging the viewer to turn their back on an antiquated generation.
