Metamorphosis by Jane Eskett, completed in 1982, has always polarized viewers. The artist herself is one of the few great admirers of her work. Her goal is to achieve total abstraction. “I want to communicate only to the extent that the painting will induce or intensify the viewer’s natural desire for contemplation without a guiding principle,” Eskett explains. She does not tell you what to see or feel. The colors temper what might otherwise be a jarring juxtaposition of fields, creating a contemplative composition.
